Ever since the piano has been in existence it has been a favorite musical instrument for people of all ages. Once you learn how to master the instrument, it becomes easier to play. But for some people the learning progression can leave some students confused and puzzled as what to do.
As a result, they often are frustrated and angry about their ability to learn the instrument.
In order to learn a new instrument like the piano, you must try to get some basic skills in a systematic and orderly way, or you will have little chance of succeeding. Whatever you do, don’t expect to perform Mozart sonatas or Beethoven’s Fur Elise in several weeks or months. Like anything else you learn, things don’t transpire immediately---these things take time like anything else. Patience and a positive attitude are great qualities to have when you are trying something new.
What every beginning pianist should do is try things small one step after another. Whether you are taking lessons from a teacher or an online piano course, you must try to learn your hand position, finger numbers, notes, rhythmic values, and acclimate yourself to the keyboard first so you feel comfortable. If your purpose in learning to play piano is to be able to read music, then your main priority is learning how to read the notes. But if you want to learn to play the chords, then you must learn the most basic chords first. Once you begin to master some of these basic skills, you are ready to tackle more difficult pieces to play.
It is also important for a beginning student to try to set goals that are easily attainable with practice. You don’t want to plan goals that are unrealistic or too challenging as you will begin to feel discouraged and negative. The right amount of small goals with some challenge would be good for you as you will have to apply yourself to learn and practice. Remember that whenever anyone beings a new activity or thing to learn, it is important to plan some goals leading to a large goal. Keep track of them and soon you will see results.
So when you learn to play an instrument like the piano, if you don’t have some objective or purpose in mind then what is the use? Plan on what you would like to achieve with your piano playing. Would you like to learn one of your favorite pieces? Or learn all the chords and the scales? Everyone has their own idea of what they would like to learn on a new musical instrument.
Don’t be frustrated if you are not getting to your goals as fast as you’d like. Once you learn the basics and feel more comfortable at the keyboard it will get easier. One important tip for adult students: don’t over analyze everything that you have to learn. It may slow you down and place mental blocks for your learning. Once thing you can learn from children is to take one step at a time and don’t think about the process too much. Just do it and don’t analyze it too much.
As a beginning student, the best tips you can be give are these: you’re your small goals in mind, set aside time every day if you can to practice even if it’s only 15 minutes, play each hand alone first then play together, and if you are puzzled ask your piano teacher or email your online piano course creator. Most teachers would love to answer your questions. Lastly, keep a positive attitude, try to stay motivated even though it’s hard sometimes, and you definitely master the basic skills at least—and probably much more.
